Jungian psychology affords respect and significance to the spiritual aspects of psychic experience. Thomas Merton, Trappist writer, hermit, poet, mystic, and social critic, has been called "one of the foremost spiritual thinkers of the twentieth century" for his autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain and his works on spirituality such as New Seeds of Contemplation. This presentation will be a contribution to the bridge possible between Merton's work, which is rooted in contemplative practice, and Jungian psychology with its emphasis on the necessity of inner work moving towards individuation.
